RSAMD - MA Arts in Social Contexts

MA Arts in Social Contexts

An innovative programme for practitioners in the visual, creative and performing arts.

Part-time or full-time, flexible options available.

About the course

This course is aimed at arts graduates and professionals who work, or aspire to work in the creative, visual or performing arts in a range of community contexts, whether in the UK or abroad. It is rooted in practical project work of relevance to social, public and community integration and development.

Is it for me?

The course is relevant to anyone wishing to extend their arts practice within existing work contexts either in the UK or internationally and is appropriate for:

• Practising professional arts workers and practising artists with training to first degree level or equivalent

• Practising arts workers without any formal qualifications but with demonstrable and quantifiable experience in their field

• Youth theatre leaders, social workers, youth leaders or educators

• Arts graduates with previous experience of working in the field.

IELTS Level 7 will be required for applicants from abroad.

What will I learn?

Through a mixture of taught modules and project-based work, it allows students to:

• develop critical thinking skills relating to the researching, theorising, planning, delivery, analysis and evaluation of socially engaged aesthetic practice in their own field or new areas of their choice.

• extend and consolidate their own personal practice in a variety of contexts.

For many the course is a way to create a framework of supporting theory around their professional experience, for others it allows them to develop further the skills they need to enhance their own personal and professional development as arts practitioners.

What will I study?

Independent study, research and reflective practice are at the heart of this course. Flexibility is a key feature, with students encouraged to work with a wide range of cultural institutions, forms and approaches while also enabling them to specialise in study areas of their own preference.

Core modules focus on establishing an effective and supportive learning community, practical interdisciplinary arts work at the student’s own level, the values and ethics of the arts worker, the planning, support and evaluation of arts practice, research skills and approaches.

Electives include:

• Arts in education

• Arts in criminal justice settings

• Theatre for youth

Key features of the programme

• Every effort is made to tailor the course to individual requirements. Both full and part-time routes are available allowing practising professionals to maintain existing practice and submit ongoing practice for credit.

• Each student is paired with a mentor who works professionally in a relevant context or art form specialism. Current mentors include representatives from main-house and touring theatre; arts organisations; organisations supporting young people; local government; education; NGOs; crime justice and the law, and health and well-being.
